How it works

How does home air conditioning actually work?

It feels like magic on a hot day, but the idea behind air conditioning is simple: it doesn't make cold, it moves heat. Here's the plain-English version.

Most people picture air conditioning as a box that "makes cold air". It's actually doing something cleverer and far more efficient: it's taking heat out of your room and dumping it outside. Understand that one idea and everything else about air con makes sense — including why it's so cheap to run and how it can heat your home in winter.

The simple version

Air conditioning uses a special fluid called a refrigerant that boils and condenses at convenient temperatures. As it circulates it soaks up heat from the air indoors, carries it through a pipe in the wall, and releases it outside. Cooler air is simply what's left behind once the heat has been carried away.

The parts, and what each does

  • The indoor unit — the sleek wall unit. A fan blows your room's air across a cold coil, which absorbs the heat.
  • The outdoor unit — the box on an outside wall. It contains the compressor and releases the collected heat to the outside air.
  • The refrigerant pipes — small insulated pipes running through the wall between the two, carrying the heat.
  • The controls — a remote or app sets the temperature; the system adjusts itself to hold it.

Why it's so efficient

A plug-in heater turns one unit of electricity into one unit of heat. Air conditioning doesn't generate heat — it moves heat — so a single unit of electricity can shift three to four units of heat energy. That's why running costs surprise people in a good way. We put real numbers on this in is air conditioning expensive to run?

Cooling in summer, heating in winter

Because it's really a heat pump, the whole cycle can run in reverse: in winter it pulls warmth out of the outside air (yes, even when it's cold) and brings it indoors. One unit, two jobs. We unpack the overlap in air conditioning vs heat pump.

This is why a portable unit disappoints. A portable has no outdoor half, so it vents its heat through a hose in a gapped window — and a lot of that heat leaks straight back in. A fixed split system does the job properly. More in the best air conditioning for UK homes.

Frequently asked questions

Does air conditioning bring in fresh air from outside?

No. A standard split system recirculates and filters the air already in the room rather than drawing air in from outside. It moves heat, not air, through the wall.

Can air conditioning heat my home in winter?

Yes. Because it's a heat pump, it can run in reverse and warm a room, usually more cheaply than a plug-in electric heater. That's why a modern system earns its keep all year.

Is air conditioning the same as a fridge?

It uses the same principle. A fridge moves heat out of the cabinet into your kitchen; air conditioning moves heat out of your room to the outside unit.
