How much does air conditioning cost to install in the UK?

It's the first question everyone asks. Here's an honest 2026 breakdown of home air conditioning prices, and what actually moves the number up or down.

Air conditioning has gone from a luxury to something a lot of UK homeowners now budget for — especially after the last few summers. The good news is that prices have come down as heat-pump technology has become mainstream. The honest answer to "how much?" is: it depends on how many rooms you want to cover and how easy they are to reach.

Typical UK installation prices in 2026

What affects the price?

  • Number of indoor units — each room you cool adds an indoor head.
  • Pipe run length — the further the indoor unit is from the outdoor condenser, the more pipework and labour.
  • Access — a ground-floor wall is quick; a second-floor unit needing scaffolding costs more.
  • System quality — premium brands like Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric cost a little more but run quieter and last longer.

Don't just chase the lowest quote. An undersized or badly-sited system will cost you more in running costs and frustration than you saved. Ask what output (kW) is being specified for each room, and why.

Is it worth it?

Remember that a modern system heats as well as cools. Because it's a heat pump, it can warm a room more cheaply than a plug-in heater — so it earns its keep in winter, not just August. Many customers see it as a year-round comfort upgrade rather than a summer-only spend.

Frequently asked questions

Is air conditioning cheaper than it used to be?

Yes. As heat-pump air conditioning has become mainstream, equipment prices have fallen. A single-room system that might have cost well over £2,500 a few years ago now often starts from around £1,800 fully fitted.

Does the price include everything?

Our guide prices include the unit, standard installation, commissioning and your certificate. The only extras are things like scaffolding for awkward access, which we flag up front in your written quote.
