The best type of air conditioning for UK homes
Walk into any shop in a heatwave and you'll be sold a portable unit. Here's why that's rarely the right answer — and what is.
There are a few different ways to cool a home, and they're not equal. Here's how the main options stack up for a typical UK house.
Split systems (the sweet spot)
A fixed split system — one outdoor unit, one indoor wall unit — is what we fit most. It's quiet, efficient, heats as well as cools, and disappears into the room. For a single bedroom, lounge or office, it's hard to beat.
Multi-split (for several rooms)
If you want to cover two, three or more rooms, a multi-split runs several indoor units from one outdoor condenser. You keep outdoor clutter to a single unit and control each room separately. Ideal for a family home.
Ducted (invisible, premium)
Ducted systems hide the indoor unit in a loft or ceiling void and deliver air through discreet grilles. It's the most seamless look, best suited to renovations and new builds where the ductwork can be planned in.
Portable units (usually a false economy)
The plug-in boxes sold every summer are tempting but disappointing: noisy, thirsty on electricity, and much less effective because they vent hot air through a hose in an open window — letting warm air straight back in. They're a stop-gap, not a solution.
| Type | Best for | Efficiency | Heats too? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Split | One room | Excellent | Yes |
| Multi-split | Several rooms | Excellent | Yes |
| Ducted | Whole home / new build | Very good | Yes |
| Portable | Emergencies only | Poor | Some |
Our take: for almost every UK home, a fixed split or multi-split system is the right long-term choice — cheaper to run, quieter, and it adds year-round value rather than cluttering a corner each August.
Frequently asked questions
Are portable air conditioners any good?
They'll take the edge off in an emergency, but they're inefficient, noisy and less effective because they vent through a window. For anything beyond occasional use, a fixed split system is far better value.
What brand of air conditioning is best?
We fit leading brands such as Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Panasonic. The bigger factor than brand is correct sizing and a quality installation — a great unit fitted badly still disappoints.
