Air conditioning for a conservatory: what actually works

Too hot to sit in by June, too cold to use by October. A conservatory is the room air conditioning was made for — if it's sized and fitted properly.

Almost every conservatory owner has the same complaint: the room is unbearable in summer and freezing in winter, so it ends up as an expensive dumping ground for half the year. Air conditioning fixes both problems at once — but a conservatory is a demanding room, so getting the sizing right matters more here than anywhere else in the house.

Why conservatories are so hard to cool

All that glass is the point of a conservatory and also its weakness. Sunlight pours in and heats the room like a greenhouse (that "solar gain" can push it into the thirties), while at night the same thin glazing lets warmth escape. A south or west-facing conservatory is the toughest of all.

Will air conditioning actually cope?

Yes — a wall-mounted split system will hold a comfortable temperature through a heatwave and warm the room on a cold morning, provided it's specified for the heat load, not just the floor area. This is the one room where a too-small unit really shows: it'll run flat out and never quite catch up. A correctly sized system barely breaks a sweat.

What a good installer will factor in

  • Glass area and orientation — how much sun the room takes, and when.
  • Roof type — polycarbonate, glass or a solid/tiled roof all behave differently.
  • Where the indoor unit goes — often on the dwarf wall or a return wall, positioned to spread air evenly.
  • Where the outdoor unit sits — discreet, accessible and within permitted development where possible.

Skip the portable. A portable air conditioner has no chance in a sunny conservatory — it can't shift enough heat and it blocks a door or window with its hose. This is a room that needs a proper fixed system. See the best air conditioning for UK homes.

The winter bonus

Because the system is a heat pump, the same unit warms the conservatory in winter far more cheaply than an electric heater — which is what finally makes the room usable in December, not just July. It's the difference between a room you avoid and a room you live in.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put air conditioning in a conservatory?

Yes, and it's one of the best rooms for it. A correctly sized wall-mounted split system cools it in summer and heats it in winter, turning a room you avoid half the year into one you use daily.

What size do I need for a conservatory?

More than you'd expect for the floor area, because of all the glass. Sizing accounts for solar gain, orientation and roof type — exactly what a survey works out. An undersized unit never quite wins.

Does it need planning permission?

For most homes the outdoor unit falls under permitted development, but there are exceptions for listed buildings, conservation areas and boundary distances. See our planning permission guide.
